October registers decrease in Brazilian leather exports

Exports of Brazilian leather and skins have reached US$ 158.262 million in October. The information has just been released by the Department of Foreign Trade from the Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade (MDIC), with further analysis from the Department of Intelligence at the Centre for the Brazilian Tanning Industry (CICB). The figure is considered to be the lowest since February 2012, when exports reached US$ 151 million.

In comparison to the same month in 2014, there has been a reduction of 36,5% – in October last year US$ 249.256 million were sold to the international market. In relation to September, there was also a decrease: - 6,6% (or US$ 169.407 million).

In the first ten months of 2015 Brazilian exports have remained 22,6% lower when compared to the same period in 2014. In comparison to the numbers from 2013, shipments decreased 6,4% from January to October.

As for the amount of hides, considering only the cattle hides, in October it was shipped 2.902 million pieces, a 3.0% increase compared to September, when total was 2.818 million.

According to executive president of CICB, José Fernando Bello, October figures reflect a downward trend registered throughout 2015. “The worldwide market remains constrained, and the new exchange rate hasn’t served to boost businesses yet”, he says.
