The last month of 2015 surprised the Brazilian leather and skins sector. Contrary to the trend of fall in exports registered throughout the year, December meant an increase in sales to the foreign market. In the period, leather suppliers sold US$ 196.563 million, an increase of 35,9% in comparison to the previous month, when exports reached US$ 144,6 million.

Despite the increase, 2015 was a difficult year for Brazilian tanneries. In December 2014, for instance, exports reached US$ 255,1 million.

During 2015, leather exports generated US$ 2,265 billion for the Brazilian economy, a figure 23,2% below the previous year, when US$ 2,948 billion were shipped overseas.

As for the amount of hides, considering only cattle hides, in November were shipped 2.668 million pieces, a decrease of 8.1 % compared to October but an increase of 22.6% over the same month last year, when total was 2.176 million.

Figures are from the Department of Foreign Trade from the Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade (MDIC), with further analysis from the Department of Intelligence at the Centre for the Brazilian Tanning Industry (CICB).
